Russian Civil War 1918-22
From the 'Essential Histories' series of Osprey this summary of the Russian Civil War is slightly longer than the other books in the series (50% so!) and still it feels a little too short. But that is the joy of this series, and not a disadvantage.
Taking the reader through the Russian Revolution, end of World War One and then the end of the Russian Civil War this is an easy to follow book. Suprisingly little about Lenin, Trotsky, Stalin (et al), as they rarely served on the front line, this book explains and examines the actions of the the 'Reds' and 'Whites' in the Civil War which eventually gave birth to a new Russia - USSR.
A very interesting read - including much on the Allies' support of the White cause (of which I was unaware), and commentary about the fact the conflict could have been won by the anti-Bolshevik fighters... with a few comments on 'what-if'.
As with much of the Essential Histories series this provides a window onto the conflict and the world at that time. Interested readers are encouraged to expand and look elsewhere as well.
