The Death of Arthur brings the Vulgate Cycle to its tragic ending. It opens with the aftermath of the Grail quest, and the king's attempts to revive the much depleted Round Table. But at this point the affair between Lancelot and Guinevere intensifies, and comes into the open when Agravain succeeds in catching them in the act. Lancelot saves the queen from the stake, and flees with her to his castle of Joyous Gard, which is besieged by Arthur. The final pages recount Arthur's death at the hands of his illegitimate son Mordred, and the deaths of Lancelot and Guinevere. Lancelot-Grail
I probably could not have comprehended this essay on God as Trinity when I was forty. But lately reading it has been a much appreciated gift. Lash has a masterful understanding of where theology and Western culture is presently, and at the same time, a deep appreciation of tradition as a necessary condition for learning. To start over in the spiritual life as if we have nothing to gain from others' experience down the centuries seems ludicrous. We keep moving on, yes, but hopefully not from a vacuous starting point. We buy cars, we do not begin by reinventing the wheel.
In other words, I found this essay enriching, accessible, and challenging. And his references open up a
trove for further reading.
