In 1878, Robert Louis Stevenson, traveled the Cevennes Range in France with Modestine, a "self-acting bedstead on four castors," the donkey.
This description of his ten days journey is a delightful mixture of descriptions of the sights intwined with the descriptions of travellers , inkeepers and other characters along the road.
The interaction with the mouse-colored Modestine makes this one of Stevenson's more humorous books.
A companion piece titled Inland Voyage describes his canoe trip a year earlier. In this journey he had a human companion -- Walter Simpson.
