Transference: taking past experiences, wounding, unmet needs, and pain into the present, projecting those past feelings onto a person who is not responsible for the initial pain. McIntyre uses her own healing from transference in a co-dependent relationship to describe how transference particularly affects relationships within churches. Some leaders who embody typical characteristics of key figures (mother, warm, nurturing, affectionate; father, supportive, affirming) are particularly prone to being the subjects of said transference and can unwittingly get embroiled in another person's problems.

The analysis of how this affects church conflict and pastoral relationships was insightful and helpful.
