After National Democracy: Rights Law and Power in America and the New Europe
Like Big Muddy (my favorite book ever written, I've finally realized), this book analyzes geography, history, politics, current events, economics, sociology in the most wonderful and misunderstood part of the United States. While the book is dated (published in the mid-1990's), it stands up well.
Big Muddy was organized from north to south, down the Mississippi River. This one rambles about, but spends plenty of time in each region, seamlessly mixing history with current events. Naturally, the Civil War plays a big role in the book, and it sums up the Siege of Vicksburg very, very well.
