… Mad Dogs, which was written by veteran reporter and novelist James Grady (of Six Days of the Condor fame) is much more inventive, hectic and, at times, moving than that synopsis would suggest. The five patients in the Day Room that fateful day are ex-CIA agents, housed at a secret mental hospital in Maine because their tethers to sanity have snapped in courageous service to their country. Their hapless psychiatrist, Leon Friedman, is murdered after the session concludes, when he's sitting alone going over notes. One of the patients returns to the Day Room and finds the skewered shrink, whose brain has been professionally punctured (via his right ear) with a sharp object.
