Broken Ground: A Novel Book

We've all read the accounts of life in East Berlin, but Broken Ground humanizes it and personalizes it in a way that makes you feel like what life must have been like there for millions, and how difficult it must have been to adjust to the new reality. She does this through the eyes of two characters, each with totally different backgrounds and worldviews, shaped by the disparity in their environments. I did indeed find it "mesmerizing" at times, just as the description of the book suggested, and I was sad to leave the main character, Kaethe Schalk, once the book was finished. I would heartily recommend Broken Ground to anybody with more than a passing interest in German culture and reunification.
