In 1842, Sam Houston, president of the new Texas Republic, wanted four things: peace with Mexico, peace with the native population, financing from Europe, and productive settlers for his vast, new country. He issued colonization contracts in an effort to meet all these objectives, but only two of President Houston's contracts actually resulted in permanent settlement.

This book is part of my "research" as to how I want to write a family history book. I will serve as a useful example of mostly history, not bogged down with names and relationships. The chapters, titles and the way he breaks it up by subject, and then mentions which family members were involved is how I want to write mine. He could have used more maps and pictures, but I really liked how it was about pieces of history, and how a member or two of his family fit into it, it was not just lists of names and dates.
