Jimmie's selfish move could ruin the whole team....

When Jimmie is elected captain of his baseball team, his first decision is to appoint himself pitcher - much to his teammates' dismay. They already have a good pitcher, Paul. When Jimmie's pitches fail to find their mark, his teammates let it be known that they want Paul back on the mound. But even if Jimmie agrees, will Paul be willing to return?

Children's Literature

Jimmie is the Captain of his baseball team, The Planets. He wants to be the star pitcher. It is hard to be a star pitcher, though, when pitching does not come easily. As Captain of the team, it is up to Jimmie to make the right decisions about who will play what positions. His best friend Paul is a good pitcher. However, Jimmie wants to be the pitcher. So Paul decides to pitch for another team, the Red Rockets. Jimmie is upset but he is not willing to give up his role as pitcher yet. Jimmie's ever present younger, observant brother does not agree with Jimmie's actions. Jimmie is only thinking of himself, which could jeopardize the entire team's reputation. By helping the team, Jimmie might also find that he will be helping himself. This story examines the repercussions of selfishness, the power of teamwork, and the success that follows the right decision. The font is large. The main idea of the story circulates around boys' sports in a realistic setting. There are no graphics, yet this is not a deterrent. The descriptions are clean and clear and the vocabulary is easy to embrace. This action packed story is a great read for sports fans. Matt Christopher Royalties, Inc., renewed this story in 1984. The original story, published in 1956 by Little, Brown, and Company, was titled Baseball Pals. Reviewer: Cheryl Williams Chang
