The author, his wife and four kids decide one summer to follow the Oregon Trail from St. Joseph, Missouri to the Oregon coast. This is the entertaining, hilarious story of their journey--complete with rattlesnake scares, unusual camping spots, scorching weather and their oppositionally defiant 3-year-old--interwoven with stories of the Independent Oregon colony, a wagon train of pioneers who traveled the same Trail in 1844. I enjoyed the way the chapters jumped back and forth from the past to the present and particularly enjoyed reading about the parts of the Trail that I've seen.
