The Psychology of Stereotyping Book

Social psychology giant Dave Hamilton recommended this book to me and so I read it. However, I'm not that into it for two reasons:
1. It doesn't seem to me that Schneider is doing enough outside reading on race, racism, and the effects of prejudice. I'm inferring from the text that he's older (at least over 50), and it seems like he thinks that racism today isn't so bad when compared with the racism of the past, so we should all just calm down. I feel like he needs to read more of the sociology literature and the political science literature and get better acquainted with the severity of racism today. It doesn't look like racism from the past, but that does not mean that it's necessarily less insidious.

2. The book moves back and forth between various content areas and approaches to social psychology without really flagging those moves for the reader. So, in one section he's talking about social identity theory and self-categorization theory, in the next personality research, and in the next social cognition. These approaches have significant differences between them and I think should be better flagged for readers. Perhaps that's not too significant if you're using this as an undergraduate text book, but for any other use it's a bit problematic.
