Julie Albright doesn t want to move away from her San Francisco neighborhood near Chinatown, even if her new apartment is just a few miles away. Moving means leaving her best friend, Ivy, and her pet rabbit, Nutmeg. Worst of all, it means leaving Dad, now that her parents are divorced. Julie tries to make the best of her new situation by joining the school s basketball team, but the coach won t allow girls to play. She learns that it s up to her to make positive changes in her new school - and her new life. The "Looking Back" section discusses the women s movement, divorce, and other issues of the turbulent 1970s.
This book is the first in a series of six historical books filled with inspiring lessons of compassion, courage, and friendship. Julie s entire book set includes: Meet Julie; Julie Tells Her Story; Happy New Year, Julie; Julie and the Eagles; Julie s Journey; and Changes for Julie.
Julie is a fun loving energetic girl. Her best friend Ivy lives right next door, her teenage sister is a little strange but pretty cool, her mother is artistic and creative, and dad is a pilot that flies all over the world. Not only does Julie have all these people in her life, she also has Nutmeg, her pet rabbit, who she loves to pet and spoil. Julie's parents have divorced and now she is moving across town with her mother and sister into an apartment. She hates that she has to live her home, her father, Ivy, and Nutmeg all behind. She does not want to live apart from her dad in a new place and go to a new school where she does not know anyone. She will get to come home to her father, Ivy, and Nutmeg on weekends, but it will not be the same. Julie has many new things to get used to once she, her mom and sister get settled in their new home. School is not just the same and she doesn't meet any new friends. Two things she does not expect to change. One is her love of basketball and the other is a career day event. Julie has a special challenge when she goes out for the basketball team. She gets support where she does not expect it, and gains the courage to stand up for herself and girls everywhere. This is another wonderful book from the "American Girl" series. Readers of all ages will love this book. Reviewer: Laura J. Brown
