Provides a brief introduction to Juliette Gordon Low, her accomplishments, and her impact on American history.

Judy Crowder - Children's Literature

Almost anyone who has munched a Girl Scout cookie has heard of Juliette Gordon Low. Thousands of Girl Scout leaders have taken their troops to see her birthplace in Savannah, Georgia. But do folks realize that Low was a remarkable woman, living in a tumultuous time in America's history? Kent captures the woman and the times in this well-written biography. "Daisy" Gordon grew up during the Civil War, a daughter of well-to-do parents, of which one was a Union sympathizer and one a Confederate. Her parents sent her to the finest boarding and finishing schools, then on a European tour, where she met the wealthy Willy Low. After they married she spent a life of travel and luxury until Willly's death in 1905. Instead of retiring into a quiet widowhood, Low yearned to do something meaningful. After meeting the founder of the Boy Scouts of America, she took on the founding of Girl Guides-she changed the name to Girl Scouts later-first in Britain then in America in 1912. Kent has added special pages about the Civil War, King Edward VII and his times and even a page about scouting today. Part of the "Our People" series, the book includes a time line, glossary, Web sites and places to visit plus a bibliography. A fine addition to personal, school or public library. 2004, The Child's World, Ages 8 to 12.
