A magnificant, spiritual Kung Fu picture book.

Children's Literature

Chinese tradition has long been stereotyped or negatively portrayed in literature. During the late 20th and early 21st centuries, this has finally been rectified. Here is a beautiful example of a story that highlights a character's rich Chinese heritage and the importance of being loyal to one's self. On a cold winter's night, a young child is orphaned as a result of General Zhao's cruelty. What good fortune that the boy is found by kind, sage Master Yang, who allows the child to live with him and his eagle. As many wise elders, Master Yang practices a specialized art of kung fu known as Eagle boxing. He practices only after the boy had gone to bed (or so he thinks). One evening, the boy is unable to sleep. Sensing what seem to be heavy wings outside, he creeps over to find Master Yang practicing. Astonished, the boy repeats each movement until he has memorized them all. But how does Master Yang react when he finds out? What will happen when an enemy arrives? Those questions and more are answered in this thoughtful and careful story. Hong's illustrations are a treasure and a delight for all, cleverly bringing a graphic novel approach to some of the double spreads. Readers will be reminded that respect is the best defense and one's skills are to be used for the good of all. Reviewer: Elizabeth Young
