A Consumer's Guide to Labratory Tests
This is a pretty comprehensive look at the issues surrounding stem cells. It does a pretty good job of examining all sides of the issue but it's fairly obvious that the author is in favor of further research/use of stem cells although with an appropriate regulatory/oversight framework in place. What I found to be most interesting about this book is the potential for disaster that does exist and the fact that it is not at all what most opponents fear. It's not just manipulating the building blocks of life and interfering in a process that many deem to be the sole province of God, but it's the potential to use what is learned as a weapon. Unfortunately, the question is no longer whether there will be stem cell research, but rather how it's going to develop. While the US has been working under the strictures imposed under the Bush administration, the rest of the world has been moving forward. This is a reality that we're going to have to accept one way or the other and the only real question, I think, is how we're going to proceed.
