Windows with Birds Book

This is a sweet and gentle story about the sometimes-upsetting experience of moving as seen through the eyes of a family's cat. He misses his window with the birds, his favorite napping places, and all the other special things about the house he used to live in before his boy took him to their new apartment. At first, he is terrified of the new house, hiding under the bed and caring little for food or familiar toys. Yet, soon, his love for the boy overcomes everything else and he is able to find new things to appreciate about his new abode.

I loved the story and illustrations as well as the clever way the book allows children to explore their feelings about moving without being direct. Through the illustrations, it is clear that the little boy is also experiencing some upset about the move but he and the cat have a special bond and their friendship helps them both get through the initial hardships and embrace a new home. It helps children to see that, while it is okay to feel nervous or sad about a big move, it is also the people (and pets) that make a true home and that love doesn't change just because ones address does.
