Pendant de temps, une petite troupe d'une vingtaine de personnes, inconnues les unes aux autres, suivait les rails rouillés, qui allaient aux baraquements, deux kilomètres plus loin, où était censé se trouver le camp de Birkenau, l'annexe de Auschwitz I, destinée à l'extermination des juifs. »
