Born into slavery in Maryland, in 1849 Harriet Tubman escaped to Pennsylvania with the assistance of a secret organization of courageous volunteers known as the Underground Railroad. Transforming herself from bondwoman into liberator, Tubman soon became the Railroad's most celebrated conductor, guiding hundreds of slaves to freedom in the North.
