Born in Norway, Bjørgen graduated from Oslo School of Architecture. After the Norwegian construction industry was devastated in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Bjørgen opened her own bed and breakfast, which she ran for seven years. During this time, she collected information on bed and breakfasts nationwide and published the first B&B guide to Norway.
