A brief introduction to the physical characteristics, temperament, uses, and breeding history of the golden retriever.

Cindy Carolan - Children's Literature

Golden retrievers instinctively love to fetch and are trained by hunters to retrieve geese, ducks and other game birds. They are also used as seeing-eye dogs. But the majority of them are domestic companions, especially in homes with small children. The cover of this book features a picture of an absolutely gorgeous golden retriever, along with a burgundy and gold dog collar border and alternating dog bones and studded collars lining the edge near the spine of the book. Inside, the pages contain bold, easily readable words and clear, close up, still and action photographs. The text begins with a fact box giving the weight, height, country of origin and life span of the dog. It continues with chapters discussing the popularity of the golden retriever due to their friendly nature, golden retrievers of the past, their looks, and how they are almost always happy and energetic companions to humans. A cautionary note is contained at the end pertaining to dog ownership and readers are given two Web sites for further research. This book would be equally valuable as an addition to an elementary school library or as a gift to any child who would like to own (or already owns) a golden retriever. The author has written over 400 children's books and travels around the world to photograph animals in their natural habitat. Part of the "Eye to Eye with Dogs" series of six books that includes Dachshunds, German Shepherds, Labrador Retrievers, Beagles and Poodles. 2003, Rourke Publishing,
