With this book, you will learn to interpret chest images and recognize the imaging findings, generate an appropriate differential diagnosis, and understand the underlying disease process. The atlas begins with a review of normal thoracic radiography, CT, and MR anatomy, and goes on to present cases on a wide range of congenital, traumatic, and acquired thoracic conditions. Each case is supported by a discussion of etiology, pathology, imaging findings, treatment, and prognosis in a concise, bullet format to give you a complete clinical overview of each disorder.

Doody Review Services

Reviewer:Scott A. Walker, MD, PhD(University of Colorado Health Sciences Center)
Description:This case-based review of chest pathology covers both lung and mediastinal disorders including trauma, developmental, neoplastic, vascular and infectious/inflammatory categories. It has an excellent normal anatomy section with some discussion of postoperative complications and support devices in the ICU.
Purpose:The authors have attempted to create a readable case-based text with complete coverage and example illustrations of 192 separate disease entities. While this book succeeds in providing an organized approach and easily readable format, the case-based format falls short in topics such as cancer staging and discussion of different types on pneumonia.
Audience:This book is appropriate for radiology residents as well as practicing radiologists who wish to become more proficient at chest radiology in general. It is designed for general radiologists who end up covering the chest service with all of the complex disease processes that are encountered. Pulmonary physicians can also benefit from this easy to read book.
Features:The anatomy section in the first chapter is excellent and reflects the long experience of the authors in chest radiology. Following this introduction, the book is divided into 12 sections of classic imaging appearances of both focal and diffuse lung disease and well as a complete coverage of mediastinal, pleural, and chest wall pathology. The section on mediastinal masses and diffuse lung disease is particularly clear and provides an excellent overview. A large section on subtle differences in 20 different types of pneumonia is slightly overemphasized. Also, staging of lung cancer is slightly confusing since each stage is presented as a separate case. Otherwise, the coverage of chest radiology topics is concise and wide ranging. Anyone interested in more in-depth information is referred to seminal journal articles on each topic at the end of the case.
Assessment:The case-based format used in this book provides a readable alternative to dense textbooks on chest radiology. It covers a wide range of material with excellent illustrations and focused, concise discussions of each disease process. It lends itself to self directed study and for board review/preparation. Although some topics do not easily fit into a case-based presentation, the anatomy section and sections on imaging and etiology of atelectasis, as well as lobar collapse, make this book a valuable addition to any chest radiology reading room.
