School Library Journal

PreS-- A simplistic series whose best feature is the bright colors of the airbrushed illustrations--but not, unfortunately, the illustrations themselves. Each book is about its title character, and is predominantly illustrated in that color: Blue Tortoise is walking to the picnic but no one will wait for him; Green Bear repaints his house every season to match the forest--green in summer, orange in autumn, white in winter, and pink in the flowering spring. Red Rhino loses his red balloon; Yellow Hippo puts various items in her yellow wagon. Blue Tortoise is the best story; the others have almost no plot. The pictures are composed in big, blobby cartoon shapes, and the layout is attractive. However, there are many better series for this age level--Eric Hill's ``Spot'' books (Putnam) and Rosemary Wells's ``Max'' books (Dial) are just two examples. --JoAnn Rees, Sunnyvale Public Library, CA
