The Word, Church and Sacraments in Protestantism and Catholicism is a theological classic. Bouyer, one of the greatest theologians of the 20th century and a convert from Protestantism, contributed significantly to the movement out of which came the Second Vatican Council's efforts to promote Christian unity. The Word, Church and Sacraments: In Protestantism and Catholicism
This is relatively short little book and a fairly fast read. It does deal with some weighty matters, and the translation into English (from the original French) is at times a bit convoluted in its grammatical constructions, so it requires some careful and attentive reading. But it is clear and straightforward in its points, and it deals with a modest number of basic topics: the Word of God, the authority of the Church and Ministry in teaching the Word, and the significance of the Sacraments, especially with respect to the divisions between "Protestants" (Lutherans included) and Roman Catholics. Some of Bouyer's points are surprisingly positive and equally challenging to common assumptions, caricatures, and prejudices. There is much to weigh and consider in what he has to say. As a basis for further conversation and discussion, this little book offers an appealing starting point. Well worth it.
