Book two of the Blue Hawk saga. First I would just like to say how much I love this series.This is a re-read for me and even though I know how it all turns out I experience all of the tensions and emotions that permeate this book. When Caleb "Blue Hawk" Sax is born his Cheyenne mother predicts that he will forever struggle to find his place in the world. Indeed, the very indian looking man with the very bright blue eyes stands out in both worlds, marked as differet. His choice to love a white woman dictates how he must live.
"He was the hawk...all power and strength, sharp of eye and full of courage and daring, rising high and visiting far places. But she was the wind that carried him..." .
The years are 1833 to 1842, Caleb and Sarah are 37 and 34 yrs. old. They have been reunited after a horrific 18 year seperation. Caleb came with the early settlers and Stephen Austin to San Filpe de Austin, which will someday be Austin, Texas. Caleb has fought through drought, food shortages and deadly attacks from the Comanche Indians. Each time Caleb is knocked down he gets back up determind to succeed in this white mans world. Now Sarah has been returned to him, he has a beautiful prosperous ranch, and his sons working beside him.
However, tensions and foreboding feelings shadow every move Caleb makes. The population has exploded with displaced Southerers, criminals, and schemers all vying for the free land and bringing with them anti Indian Sentiments. Byron Claussen rears his ugly head once again threatening to destroy Caleb and Sarahs life. The need for independence from Mexico blows up and Caleb finds himself again in a white mans war. Through it all there is Caleb and Sarah's love that endures all.
I have given this five emotional stars for the sheer ejoyment of going along with Caleb and Sarah as they fight for each other.
