Introduces the main religious festivals of Christianity, telling the story behind each festival, describing how it is celebrated around the world, and providing instructions ...
This book describes various Christian festivals in the year, from Advent through All Soul's Day. It gives background and tells the various ways festivals are celebrated around the world, such as St. Lucia's Day in Sweden, Thanksgiving in the U.S.A., and the Day of the Dead in Mexico, all of which have been done many times. The paragraph on Mother's Day says that it falls on the second Sunday of Lent as it does in England, which may confuse children in the United States, where Mother's Day falls on the second Sunday of May. The text is broken into paragraphs, each with a title. The two page spreads titled "Summer Festivals" and "Harvest Festivals" seem to beg the question. Unimaginative craft ideas, such as making an Advent calendar or decorating Easter eggs are explained and illustrated. Bright, clear photographs enliven the text. A festival calendar, glossary, further resources, and index are included. This is part of a series, "A Year of Festivals." This gathering of generalizations seems a rather mundane effort. 2004, Smart Apple Media/Franklin Watts, Ages 8 to 12.
