In April 1865 the Civil War was over for most Americans, including the more than 600,000 soldiers, North and South, who died from wounds or disease. Confederate President Jefferson Davis and much of his administration had fled Richmond, accompanied by an escort of cavalry, various hangers-on, and all that was left of the treasury. With the Davis party was a navy paymaster, James S. Semple. In Washington, Georgia, a small town untouched by the war, he was entrusted with $86,000 in gold coin and bullion (about $1 million in today's money) and disappeared into the night. I enjoyed hearing Mr. Millett present his book at a Civil War symposium a few years ago, which prompted me to read his thoroughly researched work on the fate of the Confederate treasury. This is a difficult topic to cover as the confederate gold is highly romanticized and often fictionalized. Given the rather sparse and limited amount of information available about the fate of the treasure, the authors have provided a highly plausible theory of the "rest of the story." Though not a treasure hunt "thriller" the book is a methodical account of the real individuals who had control over this wealth at the end of the war. I would recommend this book to the Civil War buff or a novice to the topic.
