The darkness can be scary. But nobody needs to be afraid of the dark. That’s the encouraging message in Go Away, Dark Night, the newest children’s book by Liz Curtis Higgs (author of the best-selling Parable series: The Pumpkin Patch Parable, The Parable of the Lily, The Sunflower Parable, and The Pine Tree Parable).

Go Away, Dark Night is the story of a young boy named Griffin who is afraid of the dark. Every night when he turns out the lights, his room turns as black as a starless sky. Griffin tries to be brave, but his toes curl up and his hands grow cold and his heart beats fast and his legs turn to jelly. If only someone could help him!

Is there anybody big enough to keep him safe? Can anyone take away the shakes and the shivers and the quivers? Parents and children alike will find out what Griffin learns in this heart-warming modern children’s classic, carefully crafted to help young children place their trust in the Lord.

Publishers Weekly

Young Griffin doesn't like the dark. Every night the dark "made his toes curl up/ and his hands grow cold/ and his heart beat fast/ and his legs turn to jelly." So Griffin turns on every light in his room and snuggles up with his teddy bear. When his mother calls to him to turn out the lights, Griffin longs to have someone stay with him so he won't be afraid of the dark. His mother tells him that God, who is bigger than either Griffin's mother or father, "can fit in your room, fit in your bed, fit in you!" That night Griffin feels God's presence in his room and sleeps peacefully, no longer afraid of the dark. Munger's soft, fuzzy watercolors feature undefined characters that don't serve the text. Higgs (The Sunflower Parable) weaves Bible verses into the story to remind children of God's presence. Ages 2-6. (Oct.)
