Recounts the life story of the author of the "Little House" books, from her childhood in Wisconsin to her old age at Rocky Ridge Farm.
Born in the Big Woods of Wisconsin in 1867, Laura Ingalls Wilder grew up on the frontier that she later wrote about in the beloved "Little House" series of books, which also inspired a 1970s popular television show, Little House on the Prairie. She moved with her family to Missouri, Kansas, Minnesota, Iowa, back to Minnesota and the Dakotas, experiencing blizzards, plagues of grasshoppers and illness, as well as happy times. After earning her teaching certificate, she married Alonzo Wilder, a farmer, with whom she eventually settled at Rocky Ridge Farm in Missouri. It was only after her daughter Rose encouraged her that Laura Ingalls Wilder, then 65 years old, began to write books about the pioneer experiences of her childhood. A straightforward, simple recounting of Mrs. Wilder's life, this biography may be a useful first tool to introduce fans of the "Little House" books to the author. Vintage photographs of Laura and her family add a degree of intimacy. A glossary and an index are included, as are references to Internet sites dedicated to Ms. Wilder's life and works. Par of the "Children's Author" series. 2001, ABDO, $19.92. Ages 4 to 8. Reviewer: Valerie O. Patterson
