Even as a boy, Leonardo da Vinci seemed destined to become a great artist. But he wanted to be much more than that. His mind was always working, and he filled notebook after notebook with ideas and questions to explore. Could he invent a flying machine? How did the human body work? Leonardo created some of world's most famous paintings, but he was also a scientist, inventor, sculptor, and architect. Leonardo da Vinci's world, comes to life through original illustrations and paintings, combined with engaging text.
This brief twenty-four page book offers an introductory glimpse into the life of the artist and inventor. With its large print and profusion of illustrations it will be of most use to visual learners and younger children. There is a medieval map of Florence along with reproductions of some of da Vinci's artworks. Sketches of his designs for weapons and a flying machine are also included. The reader learns that Leonardo was apprenticed to a famous artist named Verrocchio, worked for the Duke of Milan who wanted to create a beautiful city, and finally lived in France where he made paintings for the royal household. Little tidbits, such as the fact that he was left-handed and wrote backwards in his notebooks, are also included. A few "Key Words" are defined at the end and an index is included. This is part of the "Tell Me About" series.
