From 1945 to 1963, the U.S. Military Academy and the U.S. Naval Academy were football powerhouses. During that time, five players from the Army and Navy teams won the greatest individual achievement award in college sports, the Heisman Trophy. Field of Valor recounts the collegiate and postcollegiate triumphs of these gladiators, from "Doc" Blanchard and Glenn Davis to Pete Dawkins and Roger Staubach. The book also tells the stories of six non-academy Heisman Trophy winners who served in the military during World War II. One of this elite group, Nile Kinnick, actually died in battle.
