Sea Otter Pup spends the first months of his life with his mother in a protected cove off the California coast, learning how to hunt for food and care for himself, before venturing out into the dangers of the Pacific Ocean.
This entry in the "Smithsonian's Backyard" series presents in story format what happens when a young bullfrog is ready to mate and finds a calling spot in the bayou from which to "brrwoom." Like others in the series, this one differentiates the various aspects of an animal, in this case, sticky tongue, bulging eyes that serve several purposes, a bulging throat, and a territory seeker. Mild danger in the form of a black-crowned heron predator is avoided when a crashing raccoon scares the bird off and the frog hops off to search for and find a special place from which to attract a mate. Suitable as a source for reports, the book also features backmatter with more information, a glossary, and an index. Kest's paintings are inviting and share well with groups. For years, my kids have loved the picture books in the Smithsonian Oceanic collection. They teach about animals by telling the story of a particular individual member of that species. The writing is simple but fluid and the stories capture emotion without being anthropomorphic. The illustrations echo the text's simplicity and charm. This particular volume is the favorite of series for my eight year old son with developmental delays. My children have begun enjoying them around three years old.
