Sea Ranch: Dwelling on the Edge
The Sea Ranch is a ten-mile stretch of land quintessential of Northern California: the wild waters of the Pacific Ocean, rocky coastline, golden meadows, and stands of redwoods are buffeted by strong winds and often shrouded in dense fog. The timber-clad buildings that inhabit it, sparsely arrayed over the landscape, almost disappear into their surroundings. Despite this modesty, The Sea Ranch has become a touchstone of 20th century architectural history, ushering in a distinctive modernist style that embraced the unique conditions of its environment.
