Retells the classic tale using dormice rather than humans as characters.
The castle is alive with preparations for the little princess's introduction to the kingdom. All the good fairies are present, waiting to give their special gifts to the princess. First Fairy promises to teach dancing and singing, Second Fairy promises to teach wondering, Third Fairy promises thinking things through, Fourth Fairy teaches bravery and truth, and Fifth Fairy promises love. But before the Sixth Fairy can deliver her promise to the princess, an ugly, screeching voice is heard, as the kingdom becomes aware of the presence of the uninvited guest. From this point in the story, the telling remains true to the original fairy tale, with the obvious exception of the characters being mice and not people. The princess falls into the foretold deep sleep and the prince finally awakens her and wins her heart. The illustrator has filled these pages with original, beautiful pictures that will make this an excellent version for storytelling. Although it may be confusing to children who have heard the original story, it is worth sharing, and will provide an excellent source for comparison study when reading to older children.
