The book begins with the retreat across Manhattan's East River that saved the Continental Army after the Battle of Long Island. It ends with Washington's recrossing of the Delaware in the daring 1776 Christmas Eve raid on the Hessian camp at Trenton.

The Unvanquished
Not everyone will like this portrait of George Washington as a tortured, insecure, and oh, not-overly-brilliant military leader; but I loved it because for all its characterization of the man as a flawed individual, it also portrayed him as someone of such determination and courage and sheer doggedness in the face of overwhelming odds that you come away in awe. What Fast seems to say is that it isn't brilliance -- Benedict Arnold was brilliant. It isn't intelligence -- Alexander Hamilton was peerless in that regard. It's character, somehow. That's why he was able to hold this country together when it was just a patchwork quilt of uneasy loyalties, ready to unravel at the slightest pull. By the time Washington comes back from the dead to win the battle of Trenton you are practically in tears. He really is the only man who could have given us our start.
