A beautiful story about a child's journey to independence. With help from his grandfather, Harris the hare learns to use his enourmous feet and hops hight into the sky. Ages 4 - 7.
Harris the hare is dismayed by the size of his feet. His loving grandfather proudly shows him all the wonderful uses of big feet. With them, he can spring high in the air. Their strength will enable him to go the mountains to observe the birds. He can dig a hole to rest from the heat, and they will allow him to run fast, very fast. Grandfather quietly explains that he is old now, and it is time for Harris to run and explore on his own. Sparse text leaves plenty of room for the delightful watercolor and ink drawings. The hares fill the pages, looming large and giving evidence of their big feet. Rayner uses unusual perspectives to convey her point of view and show motion. She adds humor (Harris uses his feet as a sun shade) and apprehension (the shadow of a menacing wolf) in this lesson on the appreciation of size. Whether viewed as a life lesson or a lively tale of a winsome rabbit, this book is satisfying either way. Reviewer: Beverley Fahey
