Discusses the development of Iran from prehistoric times, its geography, governments, religious beliefs, culture, social changes, and modern problems.
Gr 7 Up-A broad introduction to the nation's geography, history, arts, and education. Customs and culture are examined in the context of Islam and Islamic law, which pervades and controls political, religious, and daily life. Basic tenets of the belief are explained: personal accountability and spiritual rewards for proper behavior, the sanctity of private space, and the importance of public demonstrations of faith. How Iranians cope with complex laws affecting women's dress, legal rights, gender segregation, and repression of non-Islamic arts is discussed. Sidebars offer anecdotes about traditions, places, and events. Black-and-white photographs modestly enhance the text. Although this title lacks the color and eye-catching appeal of Mary V. Fox's Iran (Children's, 1991), the currency, emphasis on Islamic teachings and restrictions, modernization problems, and economic challenges make this new title a useful, informative resource. In contrast, Charles Clark's Iran (Greenhaven, 2002) focuses on the political history and the religious and social factors and personalities that sparked and have sustained the Islamic revolution.-Gerry Larson, Durham School of the Arts, NC Copyright 2003 Cahners Business Information.
