With the help of this guide, business travelers will see beyond the stereotypes and misinformation that often precede a visit overseas. Whether they plan to stay a day or a year, they'll benefit from such topics as understanding the rules of driving and monetary systems, setting up an office, and building a business relationship.
The "Countries of the World" series will be hit with student researchers due to the easy to read text and perhaps the best illustrations of any of the countries series books on the market. Most of the illustrations are photographs, vibrant and crystal clear. However, there are a few drawbacks--captions versus sidebars and more depth in topics is needed. While the captions are in bold print near the photos, the reader must look for the direction key (above, left, etc), so as not to confuse the caption with a small sidebar of information usually unrelated to the photo. Many sidebars and illustrations also contain reference to another page number for "a closer look" similar to the choose-your-own-adventure tales. Divided into three distinct sections, the overview presents geography, history, government and economy, people and lifestyle, arts, leisure and festivals, and food. The middle section, entitled "a closer look." is somewhat like reading miscellaneous trivia about Australia and its people. Captain Cook, the Dreamtime, Great Barrier Reef, sheep, and surfing are a few of those topics. The final section deals with relationships between Australia and North America, both historical and current. The back of the book includes a reproducible country map for teachers wishing to reinforce map skills. At a glance facts, glossary of Australian slang/English vocabulary, and index.
