David O. Staats

This book reviews neuropsychologic testing in older adults in assessing dementia and depression. It also discusses tests of competency and how to discuss the results of neuropsychological testing with older persons and their caregivers. The purpose is to review neuropsychological testing in older adults to assess dementing illnesses and depression. It succeeds admirably in doing so. The audience is practicing clinical psychologists. Neurologists, geriatricians, and trainees in these areas will also find this book quite useful. The book is published by the prestigious American Psychological Association. This book has marvelous bibliographic essays on neuropsychologic testing for dementing illnesses and depression. There are chapters discussing measurement of competency and how to discuss the findings of neuropsychologic testing with older persons and their caregivers. There is also a survey of clinical psychologists working with older persons and an appendix that gives names of psychological tests for older persons. This sophisticated book will be appreciated by clinical psychologists and others performing assessments in older persons. This is clearly not a textbook, and the work assumes familiarity with psychometric testing. Its brilliant bibliographic essays on psychometric testing in older persons, including material on how to measure competency, make it essential for any medical or reference library. The chapters on measuring competency, of counseling older persons and their caregivers, and how psychometric testing fits into the assessment process more generally are all excellent.
