Gerda, Eliza's goat, is always getting into scrapes and trouble. Humor reigns until it's clear that her antics are dooming her. But when Gerda saves a neighbor's child from the river her heroics earn her a new home.
K-Gr 2-This early chapter book revolves around a goat that is causing trouble by escaping her pen and eating neighbors' apples and laundry. Her family can't afford a fence to keep her in, so Eliza's father decides that his only option is to put her down. When the girl hears this, she runs away with Gerda, who rescues a child who fell into the creek. Thus, the animal earns a new home with a family who puts up a strong fence. Simple line drawings illustrate the text. Characters, most of whom are grouchy, are abruptly introduced, which can be confusing for young readers and leaves little room for empathy. This contrived story is unlikely to appeal to a young audience.-Laurel L. Iakovakis, Douglas County Libraries, Castle Rock, CO Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
