A Terrible Secret
Always looking for a good high-interest title for readers who aren't hooked on books yet, I checked out "A Terrible Sceret." "A Terrible Mess" is more like it. Here are some words from pages 4 and 5: phosphorescent, gypsy, turban, exuberant, loft, denouncing, washroom, mind-boggling. These alone are an indication of how inappropriate this title is for lower-skilled readers. Can you imagine a limited English proficinet speaker making her way through this? And the challenging vocabulary appears before the many characters and multiple story lines spaghetti in. There's a romance, twisted up with a false romance, a mysterious death in the past, a mysterious older brother, a troubled best friend, classism, STDs, suaced with clunky translation from the original French. All of it is hashed together, none of it would be readable by anyone who lacked for skill or motivation. Heck, I have both, and it was a slog.
A number of publishers have sprung up - Orca, HIP-Edge, Townsend - offering titles to fit the hi/lo readership. Lorimer will need to do better. I'll check out some other titles in the "Side Street" series - perhaps "Terrible Secret" is an anomaly - but give this one a wide berth.
