Description:This fourth edition of a comprehensive review of the pathogenesis, classification, evaluation, and management of otitis media in infants and children includes updated references to newer antibiotic therapy for resistant organisms and interpretation of recommendations regarding published guidelines for management. It replaces the previous edition published in 2001.
Purpose:The book provides a critical and contemporary review of the latest medical information related to otitis media in infants and children. Considering that otitis media is known to contribute to the incidence of hearing loss in children and has a significant financial impact on the healthcare system, the book is of considerable value to the medical community.
Audience:It would be of benefit to medical residents and practitioners involved in the care of children, particularly pediatricians, family practitioners, and otolaryngologists.
Features:The basic classification and terminology of otitis media are covered. The sections on the pathogenesis, epidemiology, and immunology discuss recent vaccines and resistant organisms and their effect on the management of otitis media. The chapter on diagnosis has numerous photos of tympanic membranes to assist practitioners in the clinical setting. Additionally, a section on techniques for examining the tympanic membrane in a child is particularly helpful for physicians in training. Guidelines for management of otitis media from the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Family Physicians are presented and discussed in the management section.
Assessment:This book covers otitis media in much greater depth than most general pediatric books and the accompanying CD-ROM has printable handouts to facilitate patient care. The updated edition incorporates information regarding alternative medicine and the clinical implications of resistant organisms in the management of otitis media. Numerous references to recent peer-reviewed articles have been added to this latest edition.
