The third book in the Mother-Daughter Book Club series by Heather Vogel Frederick follows the girls for a new year of humor and friendship.

Children's Literature

The four book club girls are experiencing life changes in eighth grade. Jess is attending an exclusive private school, compliments of an anonymous donor; Megan's grandmother moves in with her family; Cassidy's mom is expecting a baby; and Emma is finding her place as editor of the school newspaper. Each of the chapters, based on seasons (beginning with autumn), has a section narrated by one of the girls. Readers who have enjoyed the first two books may feel like they are visiting old friends. Those who read this book first will spend a lot of time trying to figure out who these characters are and which one is doing the talking at any given time. In fact, it takes a while to discern who is in the club and who is not. One of the mothers makes arrangements for the girls to each have a pen pal with a mother-daughter book club in Wyoming. The Concord girls, their moms, and several other people travel to Wyoming in the last chapter (summer). References are made throughout to their current reading selection: Daddy-Long-Legs by Jean Webster. That book has some similarities to Jess's situation, with a young woman attending college, thanks to a mysterious benefactor. As the distinct personalities of the girls and their situations emerge, the various stories come together for a satisfying conclusion. "The Mother-Daughter Club" series. Reviewer: Phyllis Kennemer, Ph.D.
