Jefferson Davis, firmly believing in slavery and states rights, gave up his U.S. Citizenship. He chose to lead the southern states in the bloodiest conflict that this country has ever seen. He is best remembered for the four years that he served as president of the Confederacy. However, he served the U.S. with distinction during the Mexican War. Under President Franklin Pierce he served as Secretary of War, and he was an outstanding member of the U.S. Senate prior to giving up his citizenship. The Civil War era was a difficult time for this country. Did the wounds ever heal? As I drive through my neighborhood here in Miami, Florida, and observe the Confederate flags flying, I don't think so. 2005, Compass Point Books, Ages 13 up.
