Jefferson Davis, firmly believing in slavery and states rights, gave up his U.S. Citizenship. He chose to lead the southern states in the bloodiest conflict that this country has ever seen. He is best remembered for the four years that he served as president of the Confederacy. However, he served the U.S. with distinction during the Mexican War. Under President Franklin Pierce he served as Secretary of War, and he was an outstanding member of the U.S. Senate prior to giving up his citizenship. The Civil War era was a difficult time for this country. Did the wounds ever heal? I have been working my way through presidential biographies and the name Thomas Hart Benton was repeatedly a prominent force administrations from Andrew Jackson to James Polk. I decided to break from the biographies of the presidents to get a deeper insight into the political views behind the name.
Reading Theodore Roosevelt's personal opinions on his career was a real treat. One of the most accessible books I've read on a historical political figure I've ever read. Doubly interesting because the opinion is coming from the perspective of a person outside my own "modern" view.
