The Love of Her Life
While this isn't my favorite Harriet Evans book, it's still a good read. Really, I seem to enjoy everything she's written, and A Hopeless Romantic is one of my favorites (it's not really for bimbos - shhh! don't tell the review below!).
Yes, as other reviewers have said, it could have been more concise, and I sometimes found myself thinking, "Hurry up and get on with it!" And I honestly would have liked to have seen more of the interaction between Kate and Mac.
But that plot twist! Wow! I thought I knew what was coming, but I had it totally backward. The book is worth reading for that point alone, but there're lots of other good things about it.
I liked Kate, and Evans did a good job of making her sympathetic. The rest of the characters were good, too - particularly in the sense that they seemed three dimensional. One thing I really like about a lot of British fiction is the same thing I like about British movies: the characters aren't always perfect. Rather, they're quirky and idiosyncratic, they have real faults instead of just the kind of faux-flaws that you might admit to in a job interview ("My worst character flaw? Oh, I supposed I'm just a bit too dedicated to my work!"), and even the main characters don't always look and behave as prettily as they might wish. Sometimes they even come across as myopic and complaining, but since those are traits shared by a large percentage of the developed world's population, it seems okay to me.
I will say that since the real "love" of Kate's life doesn't make it into all that much of the book, maybe Evans should have called it The Hell of Her Life.
