Slavery Ordained of God is a glimpse into the mind of a Presbyterian minister speaking to the General assembly on the condition of slavery. Rev. Fred. A. Ross, D.D. wrote Slavery Ordained of God from speeches and letters on the subject of slavery. Ross believed that slavery was ordained by God. He felt that it was best for the slave, the master and the country in general until a better solution was found. He further argues that the Southern slave although in a poor situation is far better off than the blacks in Africa. Ross rejects and defends slave-holding as a "blot on our holy religion," and in the next breath, makes all sorts of apologies and justifications for the slave-holder.
