Text to Self: I grew up near the Rosebud Sioux Reservation and have been fascinated with the Native American culture since I was a young child. I remember riding my paint pony and pretending that I was living on the planes with my people. I had a pair of moccasins, I grew my hair out so that I could wear it in braids and pretended to speak Lakota. At that time there were not many books written about the Lakota so I studied whatever I could find in history books. My interest deepened and expanded when I learned about the Aztec, Inca and Maya Indians, though I still hunted for information written about Lakota. I've read Black Elk Speaks dozens of times and also had my 8th grade class read it as their novel. I was really excited to discover this more colorful translation. IThe graphics, combined with real photos makes for a very powerful reading experience. I especially like the mixture of real photos with the colorful illustrations. The book is like taking a virtual field trip. This is a book I would have LOVED to owned as a kid.
