Demeaning and debilitating in the extreme, the Great Depression of the 1930s was a crucible in which the character of America's youth was forged, to endure and strive beyond anyone's expectations. By the time that World War II progressed to the battle of Britain, we were primed for our eventual entry into the conflict. Having witnessed several years of the new face of war-aerial combat, and bombing operations-a large segment of American youth from all walks and stations in life were eager to shed the bonds of the depression, and of the Earth itself, by joining the nation's air forces. The Fledglings is the story of how we "grew wings" and prepared for aerial combat. Learning to fly was fraught with endless danger and death, yet it provided us with a rich palette of humor and experience that was the essence of World War II aviation. It was, indeed, the best of times.
