Erec Rex continues his quest to become king in Kaza Kingsley's The Three Furies.

VOYA

Thirteen-year-old Erec Rex must complete twelve dangerous quests to inherit the throne of Alypium from King Piter, his father. When his fourth adventure, The Three Furies, opens, Erec is home in New Jersey, taking a break. Erec's vacation is interrupted when his family is targeted by strange invaders and must escape to Alypium. Once there, Erec discovers his father dangerously weakened and his best friend and burgeoning love interest, Bethany, imprisoned by the evil Shadow Prince. Erec finds himself facing dangers such as visiting the terrifying Nightmare Realm, invading the stronghold of the Shadow Prince, and preventing the Three Furies from annihilating both Alypium and Upper Earth. Erec has plenty of help along the way from his growing circle of loyal friends. As always, several valuable lessons are learned—this time about trust, loyalty and compassion. This is a clever and engaging series. The world is described extremely well, with many fascinating magical oddities and creatures. Snail Mail, for example, involves actual snails delivering letters and Nitrowisherine is an explosive that grants you a wish after detonation. The characters are fully drawn and evolving nicely as the series progresses. The quests are exciting and the plot twists in several surprising ways. The dialogue is stiff at times, and there is some unnecessary repetition, but overall, this is an excellent book. At well over 500 pages, it is still a fast, enthralling read and fans will be anxious for the next book in the series. Reviewer: Heather Pittman
