Things Are Gonna Get Ugly Book

"I look up, staring at the face staring back at me. There was no mistake … there must be someone else looking at herself in the mirror." Things Are Gonna Get Ugly by Hillary Homzie is about a girl named Ernestine Smith. During a move from Pennsylvania to California she transforms herself from being geeky and ugly Ernestine to being beautiful and popular Taffeta Smith. At Cambridge Middle School she is known as the leader of the girls, but when she is caught cheating off of Winslow (a guy who has a huge crush on her) …her teacher Mr.Dribble's asks her a very simple question "would you like a fresh start instead of facing the consequences?"Of course she jumps at this opportunity, but little did she know it would change her back into Ernestine Smith. The only way to get her life as Taffeta Smith back is to get Winslow to agree to dance with her at Winterfest. This would have been no problem for Taffeta, but for Ernestine, she finds that even Winslow being as geeky as he is won't even go to Winterfest. She learns she needs to be careful about what she wishes for.
In this book I really liked the plot twist that created tension and suspense. During the book I was constantly going back and forth about if she was going to be able to get Winslow to dance with her not. I found myself not wanting to put the book down. The only thing I did not like was that the book was written in headings and not chapters. I believe the way the book was set up made it more confusing. I would rate this book a four and a half stars out of five because it was a wonderful book, but I didn't like the way it was set up. I would recommend this book to anyone who is ages eleven to fourteen. Many kids those ages could find this book is really relatable because it talks about the hardships of middle school. This makes it a great book to read, if you are going to become or are currently in middle school.
