In Cynthia Rylant and Sucie Stevenson's Annie & Snowball and the Cozy Nest, Annie and Henry impatiently wait for a nest of baby birds to hatch.

Children's Literature

It was May and Annie was happy. So many good things were happening. Her cousin, Henry, was having a birthday. Tulips were blooming in the garden, and a bird was building a nest on her front porch. Annie, Snowball (her pet rabbit), Henry, and Henry's enormous dog Mudge have all been observing the building process, but they haven't been able to see who is building it. In the second chapter they learn that it is a robin's nest, and in the third chapter they see that there are five blue eggs in it. Annie's dad had told her she could look at the eggs but not touch them, and explained that the mother robin wouldn't like it if she did. The kids are very careful when they peek in. In the fourth chapter, when Henry and his family are over at Annie's for breakfast, they hear cheep cheep cheep coming from outside. The eggs have hatched, and the robin is feeding them. After watching for a bit, everyone goes back inside and finishes their pancakes. It is not the most exciting of books. Reviewer: Sara Lorimer
